I've had two conversations this week that reveal the power of serving with other believers. My first conversation was with a man who is knee deep in serving our church in so many ways. We talked about how we think it is strange that someone would call themselves a "follower of Christ" and yet not serve in some way. And we realized that almost all of our current friendships have come from serving together. I met my bride while both of us were serving at student retreat weekend. I met one of my best friends, Dandy, in 1996 by serving in student ministry together.
My second conversation was with a young lady whom I have known for many years. She has walked through a very tough year and is still facing difficulties. I asked her where she was going to church...hoping that a group of believers had been surrounding her during this year. She shared that she had stopped going....and stopped serving. Loneliness and depression had plagued her. She had pulled the plug to her own life support by stepping away from the hands and feet of Jesus....we are the body!
Jesus said he came to earth to SERVE not be served. And think of all the times that Jesus and his disciples served others together: feeding, healing, teaching, and praying. While they were serving, they were building intimate friendships. Serving = Relationships.
Today, if you do not go to a local church. Start. I know there are hypocrites...and I number myself among them. I can't even live up to my own expectations much less yours. But there is a power in sharing life with imperfect people. And when you go to church don't just sit in a chair for a worship service....serve someone! And when you serve, you will build friendships and encouraging relationships. A sure way to get bored with your faith is to simply GO to church. SERVE HARD!
